Perhaps he learned from the problems that plagued Judaism and Christianity when it came to canonizing (declaring sacred) their religious texts. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of scriptures that never made it into the bible. With Christianity, there were several groups in the beginning centuries and each had its own set of scriptures held sacred (or different versions of the same texts). It basically became a question of which group would dominate that would determine the bible that we use today.

It wasn't until the late 4th century that the current selection of texts in the bible was selected by the one group (often called proto-orthodox by scholars) that edged out the other Christian groups. Uthman, whether aware of this history or not, helped to avoid the potential problem by canonizing the Qur'an within a short time of Muhammed's death.

He made multiple authentic copies and removed all other copies which were written by people for themselves. We still have today one of those authentic copies made by him.
