Since yesterday, I've been experiencing MAJOR panic attacks (it's been about a year since I had them like this)...

I'm pretty sure these recent attacks all stem from this terrorism crap, but I don't know how to make them go away...

I'm very familiar with thought-stopping techiniques, etc. as I've been through ten years of extensive therapy. I know what to do to feel better and none of it is working...

Should I consider going back on meds? I've been med-free for two years and HATE to go back to medication since I've been able to be fine without them until now.

What to do???

I completely understand what you are going through. I have suffered with panic attacks since I was 17. The first thing I would do is talk to your therapist if you are still seeing one. They might be able to suggest something other than thought stopping techniques, etc. I have found that getting together with others who are experiencing the same anxieties I am and talking about them helps. If you aren't seeing a therapist, talk to you family doctor. He/She may be able to suggest a short term anxiety med such as Klonapin or Xanax that can be taken on as as needed basis. That's what I am doing right now. I don't feel like I need the meds to handle everyday stress but I know that they are there if I need them. That fact alone has helped ease my panic attacks. Hope you start feeling better soon.

Stay away from the medicine as long as you can and take it easy - cool down. The chance to be a victim of terrorism is low. When a statistical chance is as low as 1/10000 it does not exists and this possibility is lower than that. Those terrorist are not after you or me as persons, they want to destroy the western economy and the western way of living. We have failed in many respects and the terrorist are taken revenge by doing what they are doing now. If we could make our politicians to make change in our societies, to a secure or better well fare, better schooling et cetera and use our money to educated the lower educated persons in the world and see to that they will have a work and money to buy things, to be able to have a family of their own, they will not have time for such thing as terrorism. Take it easy my friend, the chances that the terror will strike on you is very low indeed. The terrorism has nothing to do with religion, it is the poor mans reaction to poverty.

Since it sounds like you had good success on medications in the past, call the counselor/physician you saw in the past who prescribe the medication. There have been many advances in the past year or two with both counseling techniques for panic attacks and which medications to prescribe.

In the meantime I would suggestion you do not turn the TV on the news, which adds to your internal anxiety. Know that many of us who have never had panic attacks are finding the terrorism information very nerve raking and finding ourselves quite tense.

Good luck

Get yourself a copy of "The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy". I love the fact that on the cover are the words. "Don't Panic!'
