Pick two you think you can trust and have a couple of lessons with each of them before you decide. There's no point being squished in a small tin box for an hour every week with some person you don't click with - you'll never learn to love driving. Make sure they've got all the relevant paperwork though...

The AA are supposed to be good, and you may get hidden extras if you buy in bulk or have an AA membership card.

Trade bodies for driving instructors

ADI Federation - an association representing approved driving instructors.

Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers(AIRSO) - an association for commercial transport, fleet management, driver training, independent and local government road safety organisations, the police, fire, health and enforcement agencies.

Driving Instructors Association - an association that represents professional driving instructors. It helps drivers wishing to develop advanced driving skills to find a instructor local to them.

UK Driving Instructors Confederation - an association that offers advice to anyone considering a career as a driving instructor. It also offers help in passing the qualifying exams and, for experienced instructors, help and advice in getting a better check test grade. The confederation also offers advice on starting, running and expanding a driving school business.
