In my neighborhood, it's definitely territory. While some of it is quite artistic, the "other guys" come along the next night and paint all over it to change whose territory it marks.

The business and home owners used to paint over it the very next morning, which keeps it down, but it's getting bad enough now that they've stopped bothering, which of course makes it worse. I hate it.

Kids in California who have been convicted of tagging and are on probation, can be re-arrested if their PO searches their (parents) home and finds a single can of spray paint or a permanent marker. It doesn't seem to matter, though.

Graffiti is a form of expressing your own artistic style in a form of words and design cleverly put together, but it also is like making a mark for your terriority. A kind of way of putting yourself on the map. I had 2 books I stole from my school libarary on Graffitti. One was on Trains, the other was on walls. THese guys were talented.

That depends on purpose to some extent and on some future critic. Come back in 50 years and ask about a particular tagger and his body of work. I've pretty much decided that part of the definition of art is that it has to have been created by someone who pursues it for the long haul, and is not content with status quo.

What about destruction of property?

Marking your territory? you need a DEED for that, you might learn from canines, they only pee on things, it is less disgusting than ruining something.

Art? try learning to draw.
