There are a couple of tests for people who claim to be prophets:
If they contradict Scripture,
If they discredit scripture,
If they add to scripture (i.e. say the Scripture is incomplete),
If they teach damnable doctrine,
If their fruit isn't in keeping with what we already know about God,
If their prophecies fail to come true,
then they are a false prophet.
P.S. Joseph Smith failed every one of these tests.
Hope that helps.

Read the instruction book carefully:

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already." - 1 John 4:1-3

First of all you have to understand that not only prophets can hear from God, if you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and you read the New Testament you will find that the Holy Spirit was sent to us to guide us to all truth as an inner witness (inside of us "we are the temple of the Holy Spirit")
So if someone gives you prophecy first you have to hear it and check inside of you (not in your mind but in your spirit) if it is right or wrong (if it gives you peace or not)
Then if it is a prophecy from God it must be aligned with His Word (Scriptures), because He never changes so if the prophecy contradicts it self with the Word is not from God.
You have to be very careful when checking a prophecy, you have to pray about it to confirm in the Word and in your spirit.

Read Deut. 18:21-22
A prophet has to produce results. If his/her words do not come true, they are not speaking for the Lord but from self. Also they have to holy for the Lord is holy. I holy man can not have evil ways. He is human and can sin at times but he can not live a life of sin. Good trees bear good fruit and evil trees bear bad fruit.

Simple. Follow the command of the prophet WITH GUIDANCE from your own study and prayer. If what was prophesied comes to pass, the prophet is justified. If not, shun their teachings and sayings as falsehoods and seek wisdom from the Word.

If you are talking about modern day prophets, then you need to test their words against what is in the Bible. If they do not line up with the word of God, then they are false prophets.

Deuteronomy 18 (no false prophecies), and Deuteronomy 13 (no pointing to a God who is different from the God of the Bible).

Also no teachings that lead a person away from the Christian God, or lead them to behavior that is contradictory to the love of Christ.

Cordially,
John
