I am a old 'great' cook. .
The best way for a new cook, (I have given this receipe many
times), is to use chuck roast, rinse and dry. . add a little oil
to a hot 4qt. pan, season the roast w/salt and pepper, brown on
all sides . . .

Lower heat, add onions (fresh or frozen or onion soup mix -as
directed on box) a jar of beef gravy and cook on low/medium heat generally a couple of hours for a 3/5 pound roast. When
the roast is done you can check it with a fork, if it falls apart it is
done.

I generally do not add potatoes or veggies to the original pot,
it changes the flavor of the roast.

you can thicken the gravy with cornstarch (recipe on box)
add other seasonings if you like.

Good luck, and welcome to the kitchen..

This is what I do.

1 roast - whatever is on sale
1 package lipton onion soup mix
1 bay leaf
small potatoes
sliced onions
baby carrots
celery with the leafs on it (1-2 small stalks)

put roast and seasonings in crockpot top with veggies and add water until almost covered. Cook on high for 4-6 hours or low for 8-10 hours. Sometimes I add a couple cans of cream of mushroom soup and not the veggies and put it over mashed potatoes, rice or noodles. My kids love it! Be sure and watch the liquids if cooking on high. You want to make sure you don't boil it dry.

Easy yummy pot roast.

INGREDIENTS:

* 1 pot roast, lean chuck, rump, etc., about 3 to 4 pounds
* 2 tablespoons oil
* 1 can (10 3/4 ounces) cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
* 1 envelope dry onion soup mix
* 1 cup water, divided
* 6 medium potatoes, peeled and quartered
* 6 carrots, sliced in 2" pieces
* 2 tablespoons flour mixed with 1/4 cup cold water

PREPARATION:
In a large pan, brown roast in oil; remove roast and set aside. Pour off excess oil. In the same pan, combine mushroom soup, onion soup mix, and 1 cup water. Heat to boiling. Return roast to pan. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2 hours, turning roast occasionally. Add potatoes and carrots. Cover and cook for another 40 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Remove meat and vegetables to serving platter. Gradually stir the flour and water mixture into the sauce in pan, stirring until sauce boils and thickens. Serve thickened sauce over roast and potatoes.
