I have a 3 year old spayed, front declawed orange tabby. When I got home from work yesterday she seemed fine. Then we went to bed. I woke up about 4 hours later and found her in the living room with her right front paw 3 times its normal size and she was limping. The kitty E.R. didn't see anything wrong. Her regular vet had me bring her right in and they are going to sedate her and check her out. Her x-ray last night didn't show any fractures, and she did not fall or anything that I know of. Ideas?

Could she have gotten stung or bitten by something? That's all I can think of. You did the right thing getting her to the vet right away to have her checked. Good luck and I hope she can come home soon.

Bites and abscesses are a MUCH more common problem in cats than fractures, and will cause severe localized swelling and limping. And it can take several days for the infection to progress to the stage that it swells and hurts.

I'd look for a wound (bite wounds being the most likely) somewhere on the affected paw. You can examine it yourself if you're careful, starting in the middle of the swelling and moving the fur back until you find a scabbed-over area. Or take her to a vet that has a better understanding of cat injuries...

Tell her what you're doing and keep a calm and loving tone in your voice; in my experience, orange cats tend to understand their humans a lot better than other breeds.

Cats (our vet explained to me some time ago) are particularly prone to abscesses because of the way they heal: the skin closes over quickly to stop bleeding, but this can keep bacteria in the wound.

This has happens to my cat all of the time. I stopped taking him to the vet because the only explanation I ever got was a pulled muscle or he twisted it some how.
Make sure they check the paw thoroughly, there could be a cut or something between his toes or hiding under the fur, as I have also experienced with him.

It may be a spider bite. The vet should be able to tell. A cat will chase bugs and such and bat them around with their paws.
