Zebra finches are pretty cheap, but they breed like crazy. They are also annoying in my opinion. Canarys are a little more expensive, but they are nice birds.

From your description I would try a zebra, spice or society finch. They are usually relatively easy to find and affordable. They are also easy to care for. Make sure and get a pair and a nest and you will have babies quite easily. They make a nice noise even though it is not a beautiful song it is pleasant. No handling required, just fresh food and water and a clean cage.

Budgies or parakeets take a little more time and cage size. Also they need toys and are happiest when part of your family. They need regular handling and can succumb to boredom easily. Also they need a balanced diet to live for their full lifespan. Parakeets are also prone to tumors and other health problems.

Canaries are the most expensive bird on your list. They are sometimes easy to breed. A male will not sing much if he has a mate and the female does not sing at all. A male canary alone will sing all of the time to call for a female. They need no handling just a clean cage food and water.

Good luck with your new feathered friends.

I have a turtle dove. They are really good for first time bird owners. They don't bite, they are very tame. mine can be picked up easily and fly around the house. It depends on what you think of as singing beautifully though. they make dove noises and ours has come up with many other strange noises.. these are the white doves you see at weddings and onmagic shows. They are very cheap for a bird. I've never seen one over $50 at a pet shop. Our cage was $75. Do a yahoo search for them and se if you can find any info. ours is about 10-13 years old and is accually fed chicken feed or quail feed (she's a picky eater lol) Now these are pigeon sized birds.

A finch requires little care just food, water, and a clean cage basically. They arent usually holdable whick you said you don't mind. They don't require a very large cage and they sing beautifully, so that is propbobly what you are looking for.

A budgie is another good bird for a first time bird owner. they dont need a very large cage, they are beautiful little birds. Most arent very tame although some are. They do well with more than one in a cage. Very smart little birds. They need a lot of toys in their cage to keep them entertained. You can find lots of books about them at pet stores. they are very comman birds.

I have 8 Birds, 2 lovebirds, 1 cockatiel, 5 parakeets; If you do not want to have to socialize with them much the finch is the best since it is not a bird to be held they are like fish of the bird world, it is fun to watch them in there cage. Finches here in alaska are around 25.00 each. Parakeets and cockatiels need lots of love and care they are very social especially if you have only one. If you have 2 you run the risk of the birds not wanting anything to do with you which in your case may be good since you don't want to hold them often. Parakeets are 20.00 and Cockatiels are around 100.00. I like to go to the pet store and they have a bulletin board that people post for sale or give away pets. You may find a breeder that you can get the bird cheaper. I got my cockatiel for 25.00 from a breeder, which happened to be the same breeder that sold to the pet store which in turn sold the birds for 100.00. Lovebirds are very difficult tempermental birds which require lots of time and patience to socialize with. Hope this helps some.

If you would like a bird that sings beautifully, ask for a boy cockatiel. They are rather social but do not need to be held all the time, and love to sing. The thing is they are bigger than the kind of bird you were describing. they are about five to six inches with there long tails and are around $130 in most pet stores

I think the best one to get is a Budgie. They are small, friendly, sing nicely, are sold at a good price, and does not need to be held often.

try a love bird if you want only 1, it will fall inlove with you and you can teach them to sing songs from the radio and tv. I dont know about breeding but these are very common inexpensive birds, very friendly
