For the past few month we have been administering insulin (vetsulin) to our cat. Each time we take him back for a glucose test his blood sugar is higher than before. We have increased the insulin each time. Any suggestions? Should we chalk it up to insulin resistance or should we change insulins? Just wanting to hear other similar experiences.

We have him on special food, have increased the insulin several times, and are going to do a fructose curve soon.

Your vet might need to do an ultrasound on your cats pancreas to see if there is a tumor that is causing the insulin resistance. As far as your insulin (Vetsulin) it was designed for animals specifically so changing may cause problems but ask your vet. Glucose control is the most important thing to achieve right now through exercise, diet and the right insulin regimen. I wish you and your furry friend luck and long life.

My previous cat, Chloe, (may she rest in peace at the rainbow bridge) had diabetes at the end of her life. My vet prescribed Humulin for her. If your cat still has high blood sugar, take her back to your vet and discuss options to up her dosage, change the type of insulin, and maybe even feed her a special type of diabetic cat food.
