The southern border is not a problem as far as terrorists are concerned. Any terrorist sophisticated enough to cause us any real harm will not cross the most polluted river in North America where he will stick out like a sore thumb. There is a large Muslim Community in Canada and potential terrorists would be less noticeable crossing the border there.

The problem with the southern border is that everyone seems to be concerned about illegal immigrants 'stealing our jobs, welfare, etc.'

Well, most Americans will not do the work the illegals will do for the pay they received. If Americans are willing, then come forth and do the work and displace the illegals.

The real problem is that our own government is too generous with the social aid and benefits. For this blame our own government, not the illegal immigrant.

If our government were to force employers to:

A. Not hire illegals (but see what happened in Nevada with the meat packing industry),

B. Pay the minimum wage w/benefits regardless of immigration status.

C. Pass legislature that will stop social aid to illegals (but don't cry if it stops for everyone).

If our government does this, guess what, the problem will end.

Finally, why is everyone so hostile? Consider that this is a nation of immigrants and the original immigrants used steel and gunpowder to seize the land from the Natives. Then those same immigrants who 'just took this land for their own' wrote their law making immigration here a legal issue.

Find workable solutions within our own government, don't stand at the border with a gun because of a misplaced fear.

Thanks for answering MY question (not sure what, if any, point I had to it but your response has been the best so far)but I will say I AM in the anti-illegal camp but will try to return the favor of a response to a question; I actually further agree with you that there have been a lot of ugly, racist remarks made towards Mexicans and memebers of other nationalities thrown into this immigration debate (I furthermore do enjoy much about Mexico and Mexican culture but am against illegal immigration). Actually, I think most Americans want and understand that both borders are porous- open to people trying to enter our nation for any number of reasons from employment opportunities to the services available here to intending harm to our nation to etc, etc. The focus IS largely on the Southern border (ironically the jist of whatever question I'm not sure I asked) simply because the vast majority of undocumented/illegal immigrants are coming from Mexico and many other Latin American nations. Generally, Canada shares a similar standard of living with the USA and, as a result, Canadian citizens have no need to come to the US (illegally or legally) for better economic opportunities, social services or any other personal liberties not enjoyed in some other nations. You are correct, however, that many immigrants (often from poorer European, Asian even African nations) come originally from yet other nations and use Canada as a "jumping ground" before finally entering illegally across the Canadian/US border. I live, literally, right across the Canadian/American border- I've always said a decent swimmer could make it easily enough across the St. Clair River- and, from time to time, we get stories of Border Patrol catching groups of people who are not Canadians trying to illegally enter Michigan by getting smuggled via car or boat; not on the scale that happens along the Mexican/American border though. And, I also often wonder every time I hear about a rare arrest of someone coming illegally from Canada just how many people successfully make it across the Northern borders here and in other states where the border is equally or even more porous/open; I personally do believe that terrorists coming from abroad into the US ARE much more likely to cross from the Canadian border because there are so many major American population centers closer to Canada (Detroit is also right on the Canadian border) and because it seems so easy to cross from my own personal observations; as I think you are pointing out as well, there also seems to be so little focus on the Northern border.

You know every time some wants to show we should let people walk all over the border they bring this up. Well everyone I know who wants to crack down on immigration wants a wall put up on BOTH north and south border.

Either anti-illegals near you don't believe this or you have not listened..I have no idea which

also what is wrong with being anti-illegal...word means opposing that which is against the law..yeah real monsters

We need BOTH of our borders secured!!! Since the 9-11 attacks, it is just LUNACY for our borders to STILL be unsecured!! The terrorists know how easy it is to sneak in here, just as everyone else knows!! That's why my user name is sealrborders (notice it is PLURAL), because i feel both borders need securing, and we need to know exactly who and what has been, and is in this country!!! Heck,it's been almost five years now,and both borders are still wide open!!!! Who KNOWS what kinds of WMD's might already be in the country.

So, let's build the border fence already. Our old immigration policies don't cut the mustard anymore, and it's time for good well-considered reforms. While Congress hems and haws over it, an estimated 1,000 people a day 'migrate' in from Mexico...

All we need in this country is a national bounty on illegals. Offer an American citizen $100.00 for each illegal they bring in dead or alive. Vigilantism? Yes, but Bush Pig and his group of morons have no answers. In my area I could make a couple of hundred thousand in just a few weeks of working.
