Male Canaries sing beautifully and they don't need or want to held and they are relatively easy to breed.

Zebra Finches peep more than sing and they peep almost constantly. If you have male and female and a nest, they will breed all the time and you don't need to hold them.

A parakeet (budgie) they like companionship, human or other budgies. I can't imagine having a budgie and not want to let it out of the cage and sit with you. They do make various chirps and whistles, but with patience they can mimic human speech.

Probably a pair of Zebra Finches would be best for you according to your wants and they also cost the least....about 15.00 for a pair.

I breed finches and if you want a bird that sings I would suggest spice finches or society finches. The males sing to the females and sometimes they jump around.Another great choice would be A Cordon Bleu Finch. They are like little bluebirds and the males sing and do a little hopping dance for the females. If you choose finches they are social birds so you need at least 2 since they dont like to be held .Good luck and I hope you get some finches!Zebras are also great they just dont sing so much as they peep!

Get a bird that is not in or close to the parrot family or you will have to spend too much time with them, they are like lil babies. i would start with a parakeet. A carary or finches you will never be able to let them out. Parakeets are easy to care for, and dont need much attention.

get a canary. Make sure you have a guarantee that it will sing. The best canaries aren't cheap. Get them when they are not in season (mating) it's the cheapest time to get. The prices vary so do your shopping. You can get one for as low as 20 dollars. Some competition level singers are 100s of dollars.
