Depends on who "we" are. Canadians, Newfoundlanders, and most European countries fought in WW1 from 1914 to 1918. The US was involved only in 1917 and 1918.

The key question is to define "we". As individuals, a number of US citizens joined the embryonic allied air forces in 1915. There were several US aces by 1916. In a more organized fashion, France created a a squadron of US-only aviators (The Esquadrille Lafayette) in 1916. It became the core of the US Army Air Force when the US formally entered the war in 1917.
Following the formal declaration of war, the first official combat participants were the Navy, which joined the British Navy in submarine hunting very quickly.
The most significant US military participation was, of course, the US Army. The US resisted French and British requests to deploy US troops as piecemeal replacements to Allied units. As a result, it took a year for US formations to train, deploy and enter combat. Major US military operations didn't begin until mid-1918.
