Seeing as non religious people are constantly asking the question "if there is a God why does He let all these bad things happen?" and slate Christians for trusting in God I am interested in hearing their thoughts on why they think bad things happen, rather than just slagging off people of a religious background.

So come on athiests... please explain why bad things happen.

Why are you asking atheiests this question. They dont' have the answer to that question. That answer will only come to those who accept christ as their savior. If you don't believe in God or accept His son Jesus as your savior, all of what a non believer knows is only the lies of satan.

You must be obedient to God and accept His son Jesus as your savior as instructed in God's word in the bible, in order to have a relationship with God. If you have a strong relationship with God and with Jesus, You will still have things happen in your life, but you wont have to go through them alone. And the stronger your relatitonship is with the Lord, the more blessings you recieve in your life. You can even have your prayers answered before you ask for something, just for being closer to the Lord and for doing what He expects from you as a Christian.

God does not cause bad things to happen, but if you dont' have a relationship with him, He will allow satan to do what ever he wants to you, because as a lost soul, you belong to satan, until you accept Jesus as your savior and start living the obedient life of a Christian. You will be then spared from a good portion of those bad things that go on in your life, and you will be given a higher understanding as to what God wants from you through those bad experiences.

When you are a Christian, all things happen for the good and glory of God. But only a Christian would know and understand what that means. The more you grow in your spiritual walk with the Lord, the more He will reveal to you in life and help you through things. Praise the Lord daily for He knows what is best for you always.

Bad things happen because we live in a world in which 'the survival of the fittest' is the way. It may not be nice if someone dies of cancer, but it does tend to wipe out those with unstable DNA. People get diseases because those little bacteria were just a bit fitter than the person's body, and they wanted to multiply. Your pet cat dies because it just got too old, or didn't see the car coming the other way.
People cause other people bad things, and the reason for this is the same reason that we are the most successful species on the planet. We are competitive and selfish, due to natural selection favouring these people.
Hope this answers your question a little bit.

i am not an atheist, but i also do not believe God is a supreme being that looks like a white man.
God is TRUTH and LOVE and bad things happen because of the mind.
good things happen because of the mind.
people have a choice to do good or bad.
the human animal is the only animal that has a choice to be positive or negative. so as long as people keep choosing to do negative things, negative things will happen--- because don't forget everything is energy.
if all negative energy is always being released, whether it's your thoughts or whether u actually do something, what do you think happens? what comes around goes around.
good thinking and good-deeds brings good positive energies around, bad ones bring bad. Simple!

Bad things happen out of humanities ability to have free will choice in all circumstances. How we choose to behave in any given situation is based upon our personal growth to this point in our lives and what the experience will teach us into the future. A better thought...why do human beings learn more from adversity than from everything going well?

You both answered and posed your own question in the very first line... Bad things happen in the world, because of PEOPLE. and Humans do bad things, because they are People.

It has nothing more to do with anything else.

God is not responsible for the mistakes of humanity or the natural disasters that occur.

He gives us the wisdom and strength to live despite all of them.
No one ever wants to see that end of it though? Strange the things we DECIDE to believe... As if blame makes anything any better.

'Bad' things do not happen in Nature; The concept of Good and Bad is a human construct. A parasite digesting its living host from the inside, a wasp laying it's eggs in the paralysed body of a grasshopper is not being 'bad', it's just perpetuating it's own genes. It does, however, seriously question the concept of a loving, benevolent creator, as Darwin pointed out.

In terms of human behaviour, as Richard Dawkins says 'Bad people will do bad things and good people will do good things. For good people to do bad things, that takes religion.'

Religion is a good thing and as long as you follow the lord then your life will be as the lord meant it. The lord likes the odd flood and earhquake. Those sinners need to be dealt with somehow.
If your family are bombed by an army ..its ok..the lord meant it...you didnt pray everyday...this is what will happen to sinners. Strip naked and run down your street shouting the lords name...he likes that...if you do that he will strike a couple of gays with lightening.
Remember there are many gods in the world and pray to the right one or you will be making your real god madder and madder.

I'm not an atheist. I am a Christian. The simple answer to your question is that it was due to the fall caused by Adam and Eve's sin in disobeying God by eating of the tree of Good and Evil.

Because people like you ignore all the rules then wonder why thing's don't work out - this is not a valid question on this site along with all the other chatters trying to open attention seeking debate question's - read the ' guidelines' atleast.

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things... that takes religion." ~ Steven Weinberg

Actually, you are directing your question to the wrong people. Atheists really don't know muchabout that sort of thing. You should be asking the Christians, since they seem to be directly accountable for most of the mischief... in the USA, at least. Here's a list of religions, listed as a percentage of the US federal prison population (1997):

The Federal Bureau of Prisons does have statistics on religious affiliations of inmates. The following are total number of inmates per religion category:

Response %
---------------------------- --------
Catholic    39.164%
Protestant    35.008%
Muslim    7.273%
American Indian    3.222%
Nation    2.320%
Rasta    1.987%
Jewish     1.773%
Church of Christ     1.744%
Pentecostal     1.463%
Moorish     1.426%
Buddhis     1.180%
Jehovah Witness     0.890%
Adventist     0.831%
Orthodox     0.502%
Mormon     0.399%
Scientology     0.254%
ATHEIST     0.209%
Hindu     0.159%
Santeria     0.157%
Sikh     0.019%
Bahai     0.012%
Krishna     0.009%

Hmmm... note that the Judeo-Christian Total works out to 83.761%. Not an unexpected result.

Note that ATHEISTS, being a moderate proportion of the USA population (about 8 - 16%) are disproportionately LESS in the prison populations (0.21%).

Pretty odd result, for a group that has no god-given guiding moral principals, huh?
