The problem of Isaiah vs Isab vs Isaac is just a matter of what the census taker thought he heard and wrote down. The official record according to the marriage index is Isaiah Rhodes:

Sarah E Barnett married a John Rhodes in Rush county, IN in 1860. John is much too young for this to be the correct marriage.

The only marriage I could find for Sarah Ann Sherer is to William Rhodes in 1875 in Marshall county, IN. John was born and raised in Greene county and the 1900 census states that John and Sarah had been married for 20 years. So this does not fit.

What does fit is John Rodes marrying Sarah Martin in Greene county in 1879. There are many spelling variations and people often wrote what they heard without asking how it is supposed to be spelled.

After the death of Sarah and perhaps the marriage of Ruth John moved to Humboldt county, IA with his son Abner. He apparently died there during the 1920s (he is listed on the 1920 census for Rutland, Humboldt county, IA as the father of Abner, but is not listed on the 1930 census).

There is a possibility that John lived into the 1930s. There is a John Rhodes (75) listed as the father-in-law to Carl Allumbaugh (53), husband of Mary (45). She first married at age 23 (about 1907-1908) which would explain her not being on the 1910 census with her father. I do not find a record of this marriage online. They are living in Bloomington, Monroe county, IN. It is possible that this is a second marriage for this couple. Her first marriage was 22 years earlier and his was 26 years earlier.

Year: 1930; Census Place: Bloomington, Monroe, Indiana; Roll: 619; Page: 8A; Enumeration District: 26; Image: 49.0.

I cannot trace back to a Revolutionary War veteran based on the information I have.

If John Rhodes was a Revolutionary War Vet, try the DAR website and go a patriot lookup.

1855 is probably his year of Death, not Birth.

I can tell you that there is an Isaac Sr b 9-4-1760 in England, died 6-?-1797 NY and was married to Charity Hill. He was a private in NY.

I looked on familysearch.org but there are too many there.
You may want to check it out since you would have more information to enter than I do to continue the search for more specifics.
