A common cause of bad doggy odor is food allergies. Some ingredients that may cause allergies are wheat, corn, chicken, and soy. These are all common ingredients in dog food, even the pricey ones like science diet and Innova. Try changing your dog's food to a brand like Natural Balance. They make a couple of good dog foods without those ingredients. The Venison and Brown Rice & Duck and Potato are both worth a try. If the other deodorizing suggestions don't do the trick, I'd try switching diets. Good luck!!

It's not just pugs. In general, dogs have a doggie odor, especially when they've been outside in the heat for a few minutes. Dogs like the way they smell and will roll in various repulsing things to ensure that they smell.
Sometimes older dogs will smell worse due to various skin problems and sebum producing glands. If your dog has a slightly greasy feel, he might need a medicated shampoo to keep him from smelling as bad.

I have a pug that is 20 months old now, and one way my vet suggested that I keep his odor down between baths is to wipe him down with a damp wash cloth dipped in baking soda once a week. then he gets a bath twice a month. I alternate between two shampoos, both of them have have a moisturizer and deodorizers in them. The First is "Buddy Wash" by: Cloud Star (Lavender & Mint)www.CloudStar.com (800)361-9079.-The Second is "Just Add Water" by:Eight In One Pet Products (Mango-Madness)www.eightinonepet.com (800)645-5154. Both these products come hightly recommended by my vet and my dogs. By washing my pug twice a month with these products and wipping him down he stays clean and smelling nice all the time. He has too, he sleeps with us.

I found a shampoo, I think by HARTZ, that has oatmeal and baking soda in it. This is a neutralizer, not a perfume cover-up. And look around your dog's environment. There may be something around that he is rolling in. Dogs, like people, like certain scents and will roll in it. I had a bassett hound that loved to smell like cow manure. (yes, LOTS of baths).
