I don't know about in India but in the U.S. it is written in reverse so you can read it in your rear view mirror in the car and get the hell out of the way. I'm guessing that's probably why they do it in India too.

Because people looking in their rear view mirrors need to READ the words of the vehicle to move out of their way when they hear the syrins coming up behind them. Sinse all mirrors only READ WORDS BACKWARDS, the abulances need it written backwards on their front fender so that the people driving their cars in front of them who need to move out of the way, will read the words correctly and get the heck out of the way. IT IS A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH in most cases.

But, for people who are dyslexic, like my sister is, they SEE letters of the alphabet backwards, so to them, the words in the rear view mirror will be backwards anyhow, and forward to them on the vehicle. Those people are taught to read backwards because they can't SEE IT any other way.

Yea... Thats only for u to read it properly when its coming behind u... And even if its ULTA (Upside down) , u can easily guess what it really means....

Main reason is that when u see it coming behind u in a super speed, u shud realise the urgency and give way for it....

Probably the same reason as in the United States:

So if you are in a car in front of it, it appears normal in your rear view mirror.

it is done on fire engines as well here in canada. the reason is so that you can read it when you look in your rear or side veiw mirrors. and thereby know that you should pull over and let them pass.
