As I mentioned in a previous question, I have started running four miles a day, four days a week. I am also watching what I eat with a food diary, taking vitamins, drinking about 2 litres of water, and just am working my abs three days a week.

I heard that it is possible, since I am not doing any strength training at the moment (only running and ab work), to get saggy muscles. Is this true? And what does that mean?

To be a little more clear, I haven't done too much weight lifting in the past - just a little to get my arms toned. I'm not too large either (5'1, 125lbs.), just definitely out of shape. I'm 25, so hopefully my skin will bounce back?

As a personal trainner. yes its possible. Because your loosing so much body fat and your skin for one is having a hard time catching up and your muscles are loosing fat. Your leggs are geting stregnth training but your arms are not. See the difference. What i suggest is taking sand weights and putting them on your arms when you run. That way its not too much for you, but it will define them and help. I also suggest doing squats and lunges in your home before you run. :)

Sagging Muscles

Running will strengthen all the muscles in your body. You'll just get lean, not bulky. If you've done weight training before or if you've been large, then it's possible that the weight loss will cause some sagging of the skin, but up to a point, your skin will shrink. The muscles won't sag though. Skin sags.

I'm sure that it's possible that you could saggy muscles. But it's not probable...especially with taking vitamins and plenty of water.

Listen, running, like jump roping, is one of the few exercises that works out parts of the body. So while your leg are being strengthened, your upper body tone is gradually based on the arm action associtated with running.

But also know that you can begin to lose muscle mass around the arm, if you are burning more calories than you are intaking. Once this occurs, the muscles will begin to burn itself instead of the fat calories that used to reside there...(And this could certainly cause the saggy muscles)

Just think of a body builder who doesnt work out after a while- he begins to lose muscle mass...and the muscles begin to flab. It's because the body, that is used to intaking 5000 -6000 calories a day and work out with those calories for energy isn't getting calories anymore. So the body will begin to use itself to get those calories. 4 Miles a day can be pretty rough on the body with time, but please be sure that you replenish your body on pastas and grains before you go running.

And plenty of water...

Keep a small water glass, which you ought to refill often, instead of a huge water bottle on your workspace.

It means you will get muscles that are more firmer if you do strength training.
