I take care of my son and his cousin during the day and they have started to play with just about anything but their toys. Infact their new favorite play things are milk jugs. They just like to carry them around and bang them on the floor. Its really cute and they don't hurt eachother with them, but its also really weird. They do this with alot of weird objects, just playing and not getting mean or trying to eat anything. Should I just let them go for it or should I discourage them and try to make them play with their toys?

Your son is showing imagination and creativity. Too many toys today esp. the ones with batteries do not engage children. You could actually just turn them on (the toys not the children) and let then run by themselves.

My only suggestion would be to make sure the jugs are clean and not smelly.

My daughter's favorite toy was an ace bandage. She would play "doctor" and bandage up her toys or herself. She would tie one end to something and drag it around the house. She would tie one end to a basket, fill the basket, and lower it over the upstairs balcony.

They are fine, let them play. As long as the objects and not dangerous, no problem. There favorite toy next week might be a brush. The purpose of a toy is to stimulate imaginative play. Just because an item is not purchased in a store from the toy department does not mean it cannot serve the purpose. Take a picture or video them playing with the jugs, it will make for a great laugh when they are adults.

That is how kids learn. Don't worry about the toys. In fact, be happy they are so easily occupied since it will save on the money you will end up spending on gadgets later on! My son used to be thrilled with cardboard boxes, and we had bought him all kinds of toys. He is a little over a year now and is only interested in the noisy toys...the cats, and the cat's food and water bowls. Just make sure you put locks on the cupboard drawers that are in their reach, since they will be getting into every available nook and cranny soon!

I would encourage it. They are expressing their creativity. It is difficult for most parents to get their kids to stop playing with toys, and then wanting more more more. If your son is happy with household items, then let him go at it. Alot of people didn't grow up with "Toys" as we know it today. They made their own toys from things around the house, and trash. So...it is just normal.

Kids have pretty active imaginations.
What you see as a milk jug, they probably see as an airplane or a giant tree monster or something of that nature.
I remember that my favorite toys as a kid were a fork and spoon.
I dont see any harm in letting them continue with that behavior, unless they start using objects of a more dangerous nature (scissors, gas cans, etc.)

As long as it is not dangerous, let them play. It shows they are using their imagination. Toys are designed for a specific purpose, milk jugs can be what ever they want them to be.

Nothing unusual here. My kids would rather play with paper towel rolls & milk cartons than their toys. All kids are like this. I sometimes wonder why I bought them toys.

just be glad that you are not like my brother in law who spent several hundreds of dollars on an electronic gadget for his kids only to have the kids play hours with the box the toy came in.

They're being creative and using their imagination. Let them do what they want to do and maybe in 30 years you'll be in a theatre watching one of their movies and wondering how they came up with this stuff. LOL

kids' favorite toys will always be things that are NOT toys. Let it go. They're not hurting anyone, and it keeps them occupied.
