My son, who is 14mos old, poops at least 5 times a day (it was 8 when he was an infant). Is this healthy? He poops so much that he has diaper rash at least once a week. And sometimes, for instance right now, he has it so bad that he screams and puts up a real fight when it comes to getting changed. Last night he was so sore that it woke him up from a dead sleep. I have used everything, A&D, hydrocortisone, balmex, huggies diaper creme... And the idea to use a warm washcloth is nice for people who are at home all of the time. I would have to be home 24 hours a day to be able to use that method with the amount of times my son poops. Anyway, I don't want to see my son in pain anymore. Yet, unless you are checking his diaper every 15 mins, it's difficult to always get the pop off right away. Is there a type of food I can avoid feeding him to prevent this? What can I do??

What does the poop look like? If it's watery then he has diarrhea and it is totally not healthy! If it's soft then it's okay. Are you feeding him a wide variety of foods daily? He could have an allergic reaction to some of the foods and that might be what is causing him to poop so often. You could try just sticking to bland foods that you are totally sure are okay for him. Soft rice, bread, simmered meats, if he's eating that. Maybe you should just start from the beginning again. You know, adding one food at a time every three days or so, and you might be able to see where the problem is...if there is a problem.
For his diaper rash, you could try leaving him without his diapers as often as possible while you're at home. Sun is very, very good for him too...just watch out that his head isn't in the sun, it needs to be shaded or something. And also, when my son had a diaper rash, pure aloe vera gel worked wonders. Just cut a leaf open and apply it. It keeps for a long time in the fridge after you've already cut it. Also, a warm bath with baking soda added can be a relief and help take away the itchiness.
Hope this helps. Hang in there!

My daughter used to be the same way. Really the only thing that worked for her was the Arbonne Diaper Rash Ointment, it cleared the rash in just a few days. http://www.arbonne.com/
We, like you tried everything!! This is the only product, prescriptions included, that helped. Also, when you give him a bath, put a little baking soda in the water, that helps to take some of the redness and swelling out too. Once he starts to potty train, it will get better!!!!

You need to get him out of disposable diapers and into cloth, that will help.
The other thing is watch what he eats, stay away from acidic foods like tomatoes because it will just increase an already sore diaper rash.
You need to air the poor baby out more too, give him more time without a diaper at all. I know that isn't always easy but what is more important, your baby or convenience?

i suppose i'd re-examine his diet but it sounds like this is his body and how it works! my son pooped a ton also...like 3 or 4 times a day at 2,3 years old (thankfully potty trained now)...still poops 3 times a day. he eats just like any other finicky preschooler. consult your doctor for sure..i wish there was a way to keep him out of a diaper for bits of time...the air is so good for diaper rash...wonder if he would just poop all over the place or maybe poop less? try bordineauxs butt paste too---i fouind it to be the best ointment....good luck!

I've heard that butt paste works really good for diaper rash, at least that's what the people say on their website... But other than that I don't know if it's normal.. Maybe ask his daycare provider, I'm sure they have a little experience..

Hiya
My DS poos 3-4 times a day too most days, and its fairly normal.
Can you not tell when he has pooed from the smell or watching his body language?
Zinc and Castor oil from the chemist is very good for rash, as is nappy free time

i would put regular desatin on with every diaper change you can even put baby powder on top of that.but i think you need to find out why he poops so much because i don't think this is normal.
