In engineering, instrumentation often refers to extra instruments that are added to something (an engine?) being tested. That could include TCs (thermocouples) to check for excess temperatures in all areas of interest. Fuel consumption gages may be added to accurately determine fuel use during steady state operation and while accelerating.

Extensive test instrumentation if often used to test prototypes and even to check production models before sales. Repair shops may also use special instrumentation to diagnose problems.
