Dogs should not eat chocolate because they are unable to deal with a chemical called theobromine which is present in chocolate. The chemical builds up and causes serious and potentially lethal symptoms of poisoning. The seriousness of the reaction will depend upon the type quantities of theobromine in the chocolate and the size, weight and general condition of the dog. Recent reports in the media have claimed that vets have identified theobromine poisoning caused by chocolate as a common cause of death for domestic dogs. Please don’t feed him any more, buy the dog friendly stuff from the pet shop, he won’t know the difference.

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine from the chocolate 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.
Xanthines from the chocolate affects the nervous system, cardiovascular system and peripheral nerves. It has a diuretic effect as well. Clinical signs:
Hyper excitability
Hyper irritability
Increased heart rate
Restlessness
Increased urination
Muscle tremors
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
So, yes it can give your dog a reaction and too much can kill.
i dont give my dog chocolate (shes too fat!)
hope this helped,

This is very bad for dogs...it actually poisons them as there is an ingredient ...something or another in the chocolate that can not be digested by them. You can kill them by feeding even chocolate buttons. If you want to give them chocolate give them the one from pet shops, even Tesco or Asda;s sell this. Do not give our chocolate...it may seem harsh but you'll be doing them a big favour.

Dog chocolate contains hardly any chocolate, and a lot of vanilla and sugar.
Chocolate is genuinly toxic to dogs, and it can kill them. Not only that, but the cocoa husk that used to be sold as a garden mulch is also fatal if they eat it.
Its best to find a different treat for your dog. Small bits of cheese or tinned hot dog are better.

I don't know anyone that feeds their dogs chocolate. The darker the chocolate the more toxic it is to dogs.

if you gave a dog cocoa beans you may well kill it as it ups the heart rate a bit to far. The cheap stuff from supermarkets has minimum cocoa in it so is not harmful as such but really shouldn't be fed to them anyway. All these variations on a primarily carniverous diet is what results in so many ailments dogs get.

you can get special doggie chocolates that do not contain theobromine which is in ordinary chocolate and is toxic to dogs in large amounts as they cannot process it. You should never feed your dog human chocolate as you could end up killing it slowly.

a tiny bit of chocolate every now and then isnt going to hurt your dog, but if they get too much it can kill them. i would buy the doggie chocs and not give them any of the real chocolate. to be on the safe side.
