Probably for the dramatic effect of the sunrises and sunsets (as well as the symbolism)....

It has to do with the path of the sun, which is from east to west. The east symbolizes birth and the west symbolizes death. Entering a cemetery from teh east reminds us of the birth of a person and as we travel to the grave we are travelling west through the person's life. When we reach the grave, we are at teh westernmost part of our journey.

It is because you keep the dead body's head placed towards east - where the sun rises - this is a ritual that has been practiced from ancient times - before all religions began ! We are still continuing with it - I am not sure whether the Bible or any other religious script has mentioned it - but this practice came way before all those scripts were ever thought of !

I think one reason is because at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, he will appear in the East.

because most Celtic and European groups believed in aligning the dead with the rising and setting of the sun
