Tapioca is an essentially flavorless starchy ingredient, or fecula, produced from treated and dried cassava (manioc) root. This root is used in many different food items throughout the world. It is also used as medicine in China. It is good for constipation and stomach ache. I often put the powder into my morning coffee.

Its also known as cassava, an undergrown root which is common in South and South-East Asia. I believe its also found in Africa. It is edible (after cooking) and is hard, white and starchy when raw. Different cultures cook it differently - it is rather plain tasting when taken without garnishing.

Mostly used as the base for snacks & deserts (in India,Thailand), and as chips and fritters in Malaysia and Indonesia. Can also be fermented and turned into an alcoholic desert. The younger leaves from the plant (usually a straight stick-like stem above ground) is cooked and eaten in Indonesia.
