She does that w/ pooing, and with peeing she pees on the edge of the box, usually half in the box half on the floor....we got her from a shelter, I know she was taken away from her previous owner because she wasn't being taken care of. Anyone have any suggestions, I've taken her to the vet, the vets response is "thats strange"

She is probably either psychologically damaged by being hit when she goes pee/poo.

More likely, however, is that she is in some kind of pain and associates the litterbox with the cause of the pain. Have a full blood panel done on her by a different vet. She proabbly has a urinary tract infection (at the least).

Good suggestions here. Sounds it's more like a fear issue than a urinary infection. I do have one cat that spray-pees, vet said he had never seen this before -- she was there waiting for some tests. Anyway some of her urine will end up outside the box. My old cat always goes to the box -- She is a manx and doesn't get her bottom all the way in each time. Some days it is three x a day that the urine ends up on the floor, some days she gets it in the box. I have been putting three or four sheets of newspaper under my boxes and that at least catches most of the urine.

I generally don't think covered boxes are a good idea as they concentrate the smell inside and many cats don't think this. Have you ever had to use a portapotty at the farmers' market or a fair? In this instance I feel it might be worth a try if she is your only cat.

I have had positive feedback from three people recently to whom I had suggested using the Bach Flower essence Rescue Remedy. It's a mixture of five essences, two of which are for fear -- fears of things in the past and fears of things in the present. It's readily available in health food stores as people use the remedies. A small bottle is around $18. You shake the bottle well and apply three to four drops to the fur between the cat's ears. Use it LAVISHLY making as many as four or five applications every day for about 10 days. This would cover any fears from her past living situation and any she is experiencing in her adjustment to your home. It is utterly benign and cannot harm your cat in any way. It is inexpensive, easy to use and I would certainly give it a shot.

It doesn't sound like a urinary infection because she is doing this for both "operations". Generally that's the first order of business when inappropriate urination raises its ugly head.

I think it's strange that the vet only said, "that's strange". Did the vet check your cat for a urinary tract infection?

I had a cat that used to go part way into his litter box (just his front half) & then pee just outside of it. He was a very overweight cat (20 lbs) & ended up having diabetes.

How new is this cat to your home? It could be just a nervous behavior if she's still getting used to things, but if it keeps happening I'd return to the vet for a more thorough check-up.

the kitty is probably stressed is the litter box in a quite area where people dont walk around and she cant here noise? the kitty might be scared someone is going to hurt her so when kitty heres someone coming or talking she runs. i suggest getting a coverd kitty box they work wonders. this way she feels safe in the box when she gose .and try putty it somewhere a little quite. if you live in a house maybe the basement . theres where i have mine by the alundry area. this way she dose her buissnes in quite .

I mean when you go to the toilet would you really like to here someone coming and barging in you are and quite times NOOOOO it ruins the hole thing for some people .

so give kitty a little privacy and see the wonder of it all .
if that dont work i suggest calling the shelter where you got her from and asking if she was doing the same thing there and ask about her health issues and history.

Are you always watching her when she goes? One of my cats just assumes he is going to be yelled at for going potty in the house and if he sees me coming he will stop going and run off like it wasn't him lol.
Have you tried to get a box with a lid? Or a really big spill shield?

It's probably from her past. She may be thinking about going to the bathroom at her previous owners house. You may be scaring her away. But most likely she was abused and thinking of her past.

Maybe... I mean the cat have that keen nose and is able to smell the odor of the poo and the pee... do u notice that when the cat poo on a place... a cat would always come back to it and poo and pee on it...
Just like us... we poo and pee on the bathroom...
Maybe.. ur cat smelled the odors of the poo and the pee.. that is why she decided to poo and pee there too...
and she smelled the scent of her pee and poo there... that is why... she always comes back to it....
