In our Judeo-Christian society, the documents collectively known as the Bible serve as the primary guide on most issues. It is interesting that many Christians take literally the references to homosexual acts, while interpreting other text with great flexibility. One person reported listening to a nationally-known woman speak in her campaign against homosexuality. She spent quite a bit of time quoting impressively from Leviticus. The listener accepted much of what the speaker said until he realized that, by Levitical standards, the crusader herself had broken many biblical laws – she spoke in church (1 Corinthians 14:34), she taught men (1 Timothy 2:12), she was wearing a dress made of cotton and polyester (Deuteronomy 22:11), and others of which he was probably unaware.

What does the Bible really say about homosexuality? Actually, very little. Most significantly, Jesus said nothing at all. Considering the relatively small amount of attention the Bible pays to the subject, we must ask ourselves why this is such a volatile issue. Other subjects about which the scriptures say a great deal (e.g. judgment, pride, hypocrisy) receive much less passionate attention. Before looking at specific passages, it is important to note that everyone understands the scriptures based on, and through, the light of what they have been taught. The Bible was not written in a cultural void, and many of its instructions and laws are simply classified as less relevant today (e.g. prohibition against eating pork).

Nowhere does the Bible actually address the idea of persons being lesbian or gay. The statements are, without exception, directed to certain homosexual acts. Early writers had no understanding of homosexuality as a psychosexual orientation. That truth is a relatively recent discovery. The biblical authors were referring to homosexual acts performed by persons they assumed were heterosexuals.

The way I understand it the old testament was there to guide people. Then Jesus came and died on the cross to wash away our sins. thus was born the new testament. He is the center of the religion. I have a calendar and next month there is a picture of him washing a man's feet. He was humble and a servant. He dined with and was friends with people who were considered not very popular. Two of his disipiles were tax collectors. They were really dispised in that time. I have a Bible that has the things he said in red letters. I read what he said. He was about love and forgiveness. someone asked him how many times should you forgive some one he said seven thousand times seven- meaning forgiveness is endless. This is Jesus. When you feel him in your heart you really don't "want" to hate others. If people only could read what he said and not "interpert" the rest of the Bible to fit there own causes. There is a saying "What would Jesus do?" Well, what would he do? Something to think about. How do you expect people to know him when your telling them he hates you because of this or that? Would he really walk up to someone and say " I hate you you think differently". I really can't picture my savior doing and saying that. Thanks for letting me have my say. peace

Well, you're wrong about the Bible not saying much about homosexual practice. There's a clear consistent stance in both the Old and New Testaments - God see homosexual practice as an abomination. There is also no scientific evidence for a genetic disposition to homosexuality. There is no "gay gene" proven. Gay sex is a sin just like extra-marital heterosexual sex. But the Bible does not condone hatred of homosexual people - rather Christians are to love the person, but hate the sin. This is the message that is often overlooked.

Whats the point in being a christian if you don't believe what the bible says? Its really important to question things however its important to face things in the reality of what God wants for us. Sin is sin, all sin is wrong and a barrier that separates us from our father innit. PRIDE is also a sin innit That's why we need Jesus, cause he is the bridge so we can in him get back into fellowship with God. He met the criteria for us, we are all sinners and homosexuality in the bible is said to be wrong just like lieing and pride and wot not. So we are all the same all sinners innit

I suspect that telling people they will be seperated from non believers after death can give them a sense that they are distinct and must work hard to maintain that differentness. As a result, targetting people who appear to have different values or lifestyles becomes important to maintain the conviction that they themselves are on the right track to heaven.
The Christian faith is not historically tolerant of people of other faiths, even within the Catholic/Protestant divide.
It is sad, when Jesus is associated with the most beautiful words in the world (the sermon on the mount, for example) many of his followers display intolerance and prejudice, reinforced by old testament quotes fired off like so many machine gun bullets.

the bible condemns homosexuality because its : -the only sin that affects your body. and jesus said that homosexuality is wrong. he said it to paul, because paul recieved his teachings from jesus. if you are homosexual, you will not inherit the kingdom of god. homosexuality is an abomination. those are statements of the bible. I agree with you that a woman should not teach people. But she was not in church, she just let people know. The law is something that jesus came to fulfill. it includes that people are not homosexual anymore. BUT the fulfilllment of the law is not necessary, because we're not jews, like wearing clothing made with different cloth and stuff. BUT not being homosexual, even if it is a part of the law, is important not to do for your own good. Otherwise it would have not been mentioned in the evangelic (new testament). PS: as for the offerings of animals: God told the people that he doesn't like the offerings LATER IN HISTORY. He wants people to obey him, and not offerings anymore. Because people also offered him weak animals or sick animals, and he only wants the best. He wants the best of us, and he doesn't want us to be homosexual. I can only tell you that I was homosexual myself ,and am fighting against it, I still have homosexual dreams though, but all in all I feel better today, really. Homosexuality feels like a delusion now. I am much more down to earth, have better contact with friends etc. Its your choice....and yes its not easy but I think its worth it, like that I can enter the kingdom of god...its always good to please him. PS: I do it because its written in all the religions I know of, also hinduism and islam, so I guess there must be something real and true about it.

I agree with you about the woman you spoke about. she was obviously in the wrong. BUT you are very mistaken about homosexual sin.The Bible does mention it a lot .In 1 kings14:24 it is mentioned as an ABOMINATION to God.It is also mentioned in 1 Corinthians 6:9 "Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters .nor adulterers nor male prostitutes, nor HOMOSEXUAL offenders,,,,will inherit the kingdom of God. If it was new then how can we trace the very word "sodomy "back to the history of the bible? If it was good for us God would lets us do it.Everyone just needs to trust Him and let him be Lord in our lives.

To answer the question, because they are still human and make mistakes; you know, for the same reason so many non-religious or atheists are bigoted and cruel.

They must pick and choose what to follow and what not to follow, that seems to be why there are so many religions/cults based on one book.
