Custard,

You can take a paperback or a newspaper on board but only once you have cleared security and it must be purchased AIRSIDE.

You can not bring your own as there is a chance it may contain a paper explosive.

Because those are the rules. The airlines must do whatever they have to to minimize risk, since there is no way to eliminate it altogether. If some moron made an explosive device, hid it in a paperback book, and detonated it during a flight, there would (of course) be people up in arms that the "authorities" were allowing uninspected books on flights!

Can I bring an elephant into your house? Why not?

The way I am reading the restrictions is you are not allowed any liguid or even toothpaste in carryon. Books are allowed. Just check your bags and no problemo.

They are paranoid that you might be hiding a bomb in your book.

I understand that they need tight security and are worried over terrorism, but I think they're overreacting a little right now.
