How to choose a watermelon
It's as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Look the watermelon over.
You are looking for a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents.
Lift it up.
The watermelon should be heavy for it's size. Watermelon is 92% water, most of the weight is water.
Turn it over.
The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. http://www.watermelon.org/watermelon_selection.asp

RE:
What are the indications of a ripe/sweet watermelon?
Only street vendors will cut a triangle in them to test for this so what can be done in stores?

A ripe watermelon will give off a sound when you thump it. It is a unique sound and you will know when you hear it. As for sweetness I have heard the brown scars are a good sign.

Yeah, we can't go slicin 'em up in the stores, lol! I look for melons with scraggily looking bottoms (rather one side) and lively colored tops. The bottom indicates how long after ripening the fruit sat on the soil in the sun. A reasonable amount of time, but not too much is a good indicationof a sweet melon. So, pick them up and flip them over!

I can't answer to sweetness but I can to ripeness:
Knock on it with your knuckles. If it sounds like your forehead, it's underripe. If it sounds like your chest, it's ripe. If it sounds like your stomach, it's overripe. It sounds silly but it works.
You should also look for a melon that's kind of heavy for its size because that'll be juicier. And check out the light patch on it; that's the side that was on the ground when it was growing. You want it to be distinct and yellowish in color.
Good luck!

a ripe watermelon can be detected by knocking on it. if it gives a low sound like it's hollow, then it's a ripe melon but if it doesn't seem to be hollow, then it's unripe.

Look for one that is yellow on the underbelly. It means it's mature. If its full of green/white strips only -- pass on that one.
