Whenever I see a question about breastfeeding in public there are several answers that state something like "You don't urinate in front of strangers so why would you breastfeed?". Do people really think that we're feeding our children excrement? Would these same people like to eat a meal with a blanket over their face, or better yet, in the bathroom?

blahblahblah - Guess what...your breast IS NOT showing when you are breastfeeding in public! THERE IS A BABY COVERING IT! Nursing moms typically show LESS skin than your average supermodel or a celebrity on the red carpet at the Oscars. A great portion of the time, people don't even realize that the baby is nursing!

Breastfeeding IS NOT indecent exposure.
Breastfeeding IS NOT comparable to taking a leak or a dump in public.
Breastfeeding is SIMPLY MEETING A CHILD'S NEEDS.

(How do you people think Mary fed baby Jesus?)

EDITED TO ADD:
For those who use a cover up like a blanket.....if that's what works for you and makes you comfortable to feed in public, that's great. Go for it.
TO ME.....it's like putting out a neon sign that says "DON'T LOOK! I'M NURSING" and it implys that you think you need to hide. Personally, I feel that I am able to be more discreet without putting up a tent.

First of all i am a male and secondly I am a father.I think that women breastfeeding a baby is the most natural thing in the world and if prudish people can't understand that a baby must be fed then I suggest that they try not eating out in public places themselves. As a baby has a right to be fed when and where they are I have never heard of anyone being offended whilst these same people are out eating at take away outlets. So i think these people should take a step back and get a reality check on themselves.

I hate that people get offended by mothers breastfeeding in public. I plan to breastfeed anywhere my baby gets hungry. If that happens to be in public, and I don't have a bottle of breastmilk ready, they are just going to have to get over it. I'm not starving my baby because idiots are offended by the most NATURAL thing ever.

And besides, like other people said, the breast is covered by the baby and I also will carry wraps/blankets to be more discreet. People need to get a grip,....its a freaking BOOB. If you've seen one, you've basically seen them all. Plus, in Europe for example, nudity is everywhere. For some reason in america, we are supposed to be "ashamed" of our bodies. In my breastfeeding class there was a lady from India, who said it is basically the only way to feed your baby there....every where else in the world breastfeeding is so common that doing it in public is not even frowned upon. I think that since as a country, a lot of women don't breastfeed - especially in public, its just different to see.

smalltd28 - I believe you should cover YOUR breasts, too. Why should a breastfeeding mother hide while my very hairy neighbor is mowing his lawn shirtless - and in the 10 years since we've live next to him, I've never complained once, I just turn around and ignore him.

Nathan's mom - click my avatar and see my two questions on the subject. There are a few comments on there that compare it to urinating and others who would send the baby to the filthy bathroom to eat. I saw one question a few weeks ago that compared breastfeeding to masturbating. These people are just SICK!

Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one and they don't always smell like roses.

I'm a BF mom and I employ what I consider modesty when I am feeding. I've never been in the habit of going top and bra-less. I prefer to keep somethings private. A light blanket thrown over the shoulder, down over your arm, while the baby is nestled in the crook nursing, isn't equivalent to a blanket over their face.

i love the fact of breastfeeding, the milk is better for the baby and it doesnt get sick as quick as other babies, i would use a blanket if my kid was hungry, he isnt going to starve because other people dont liek the fact of me breastfeeding, or u can usually pump some out before u go out so u dont have to do it in public

People don't think you should show your private parts like vagina, penis or breast as it offends them to see other parts of peoples bodies in the open. That the way the society has brought us up and think that if you can breast feed your child it is a bonus and cheaper to feed them on as formula cost so much to feed your child.

One, I agree with you. But I have to say I've never heard anyone compare breastfeeding to peeing before. That's pretty naive. :o)

And exactly where are you seeing questions in public about breastfeeding? Are these posted somewhere, or do people just say them to you?

It's because a lot of adults see the breasts in a sexual way so you aren't supposed to show them in public...ah well being narrow minded is a great thing isn't it...so at the beginning of time there were microwaves and powdered milk...I think ye not. Their problem not yours, they don't have to look anyway.
