If you are at work and something bad happened to you and you don’t want to show that at work place I understand that. I am talking about people who know that their life isn’t perfect but they don’t even tell their family or friend. They just put on their happy face all the time how can they do that? If something bad happened to me I can’t wait talk about, I mean if my friends or family are not around I will call and tell them. I don’t like pretending that is just me. How about the rest of you I am just wondering?

depends on what it is, i just had my 7th miscarriage and although people know that I'm hurting I kind of make out I feel so much better than i do. 2 reasons..
1) i know there are people hurting for me especially my hubby - and i dont want them to feel bad and second is I'm over the sympathy thing, sounds rude but they're running out of things to say.

you'll find most people nullify their feeling to spare others.
might not be right but its the way it is sometimes!

I actually tend to do that sometimes when I am sad. I don't like being sad or mad or whatever, so I simply act happy until I am. Usually, though, I don't get too mad or sad, so if I pretend to be happy and I'm around my friends, I'll cheer up quickly. I can't pretend to be happy about some things, though (like the new national id, the war, lower moral in the US, poverty and unemployment rates, etc.).

Still, since I'm not usually sad, when I am it's kind of a big deal. So, I'll sometimes let it show for attention or to prove that I actually do have feelings beyond being hyper and happy with laughter and smiles. Still, I can't keep up the sad act. lol.

Hope that helps you out.

hi,
i used to do this all the time, i`m still 17 but i was in a relationship with a guy since i was 14... it was an abusive relationship and noone knew about. i couldnt tell my friends and even my parents didnt know about the guy, so i just had to pretend evrything was alright and that i was happy but in the end evrything just got to me and i became kind of depressive and was on medication... i never told anyone because i was ahamed of what happened and the guy also made me feel guilty. i used to think it was my fault that our relationship wasnt working...

guilty... I was in an abusive relationship and no one realised until the end. My best friend was really the only one that had a clue but she wasn't sure so she didn't want to ask and possibly hurt my feelings. My mom was actually sad when I broke up w/ the guy until I told her the truth. For me it was an issue of shame. I was ashamed that I got myself in this situation and didn't want anyone to know. Became a great actress in the process though.

I do this a lot. When I am around people, I will try to look happy even if I feel like I am dying on the inside. I don't like to do that but I will because I don't want people worrying about me. I don't even tell my husband when I am really depressed or down because he has enough to worry about. I think a lot of women do this. We worry about other people before we worry about us.

I too put on the happy face. I try to hide my emotions from those around me. I think I am attempting to save them from having to deal with me, feel sorry for me, worry about me.

If something is wrong with me everyone knows about it. I talk to my friends about all my problems. I can't pretend either. I am not very good at pretending.

have you heard of smiling depression? sometimes the easiest way to cope is to smile and put on a happy face because the alternative is to fall apart

We all do that to certain degrees. It's great that you have someone to talk to. We all need a good listener, as well as being one.

some people are afraid to have other people judge them. it's true though, people do that. Some just don't wear their heart on their shoulders.
