There is a real "devil", his name is Satan. Some of the evil we do is due to his influence we allow in our lives, but at the same time some is our fault. I mean the "spirit of man" is perfectly capable of committing many lude and evile acts also. As your question asks, we DO need to take responsibility for our actions and stop blaming Satan for everything. It's just like an alcoholic must first admit he's an alcoholic before he can stop drinking. I can give sources from the Bible later if you need, but don't have one in front of me right now.

According to the Bible, Satan the Devil is a living person. A spirit person. He is a manslayer and a liar

satan is definitely real, but he can't make us do anything. we have to make that choice on our own. in a way you are very correct. we do have to remember that some of the things we are tempted with by him are usually wrapped up in a pretty package or are even small everyday things. so our choices should be made carefully and in the word of god.
