Put the CD into your computer. Follow the instructions. Do not install the professional edition on the same drive you have home edition installed. This may cause conflicts.

During the installation of professional edition it will ask you if you want to format your hard drive. If you do not mind losing all your work, then format the drive and install professional. You can also install professional on to another partition so that you can have two operating systems. Otherwise backup everything you need onto a CD or move it to another partition first.

Why?

What benefits to expect to gain? If you are not on a network environment, there isn't any functional reason to be using Windows XP Pro.

If you have Windows XP Home, you can activate any Windows XP Pro function or program that you need. It costs nothing, and takes only moments to get working.

Have you bought the XP Professional CD?

Is there anything currently on the computer that you need? Historically, upgrades come along with problems, and I prefer wipe/reinstalls. The XP home / XP Pro should be relatively painless, but I haven't done one myself.

Make sure your computer will boot from CD. You might have to modify your BIOS for this.

With the XP Pro upgrade (or full install) CD inserted, turn on the computer.

When you see the options screen, click on install, then follow the prompts to upgrade.

1st go to a shop and buy a windows xp pro sp2 CD
or
download it form emule/mldonkey and try it(piracy is ilegal!)

then backup your fies and settings and be sure to have your software installers and DRIVERS

then put cd on computer, restart and try to auto-run the installer
if a message similar to "press any key to boot form cd" doesnt appear, you should go to your bios and set up your boot secuence to have cd first.

after that, a blue welcome screen will appear, press enter and f8 for eula
DONT update home ed, DELETE it and FORMAT your disk

i recommend you to make 2 partitions: first for windows+programs and the other for documents...

the rest its like next-next-next...

good luck and i hope everyting goes ok.
