It is possible to smoke on airplanes, but it's at the Airlines Discretion. What probably happened was that the aeroplane came with them as standard, though Virgin decided all it's flights were non smoking.
Some airlines don't mind you smoking, so I guess Ash trays would come in handy then.

Two reasons. First, in some parts of the world, smoking is still allowed. Domestic flights in Japan, for example.
Second, even where it's prohibited, someone is bound to break the rules eventually and they'd rather it be put out in an ashtray than tossed in the trash bin where it can start a fire. Back in the 1980s there was just such an incident.

Bostonianinmo got it right! While smoking has been banned on all flights originating and/or ending in the USA, there are still a few nicotine addicts out there who are willing to take a chance with lighting up to get their fix while flying on the airplane. When the cabin crew takes the smoldering bit of filth away, there has to be somewhere safe to put it. That's why all American passenger aircraft have at least one ashtray, usually mounted on the forward lav door.

Very simple, because a 737 has two engines and if they both cut out at 40,000 feet, you would hate to burn someone with your cigarette or get ashes into someones nice business suit while 300 passengers are trying to scramble out that emergency door while it free falls at 600 MPH.
Passengers still have to demonstrate proper etiquette. It is almost like the concept of your seat cushion serving as a floation device while you float for days in shark infested waters.

There are still places in the world where it is legal to smoke on an aircraft. Boeing probably just built the plane with ashtrays and now VA doesn't want smoking in it's planes.

water should not be on the lavatory seat - no excuses. Any liquid substance should not be on a bathroom seat, even if that is been expelled with the aid of a human or a tap. If i stumbled in this after I walked into the lavatory, i ought to positioned up a note proper on the wall throughout from the lavatory seat that reads "Please pay interest on your target!" no longer all of us will verify their digital mail for this note and if it is going into unsolicited mail, you're fortunate they even pay interest. Managers might want to tell the employees that it is had to freshen up after one's self...it is purely undesirable manners and undesirable hygiene..
