5.56mm ///7.62 And make and model

5.56x45mm - The HK416. Gas-piston version of the M4 in service with American SOCOM units. All the problems with carbon being shot into the action by direct gas impingement are gone. Saw one close up a few months ago in the field. Lovely piece of work. Totally reliable.

7.62x39mm - M76 Valmet in service with Finnish jaeger and frontline units. The apex of the AK47 family, machined to tolerances with features that only enhance accuracy without sacrificing any of the legendary reliability. Brilliant.

Of course, there are Galils, G3s, FALs, and such, but 7.62x51 NATO was excluded as a choice in the question, so these are the results for consideration.

Having served in the Marine Corps, I would have to cast my vote for the M-16A2. This 5.56mm rifle (commercially known as the .223 Remington), has a great deal of power for such a small round, a very flat trajectory, and long range (accurate to 850 yards on an individual target), it is also relatively cheap and lightweight, only weighing about seven and a half pounds with a 30 round magazine.

The AK-47 as everyone knows it is no longer in military service with any major countries anymore. It was upgrade in 1974 to the AK74, and went from a 7.62 round, to 5.4mm, and has been further refined into the AKM. The AK family of rifles are still excellent and reliable, although they still don't have the range or accuracy of the M16, although this all depends on the individual shooter.

I would have to say the M2. Defiantly the best that weapon system it has been all most un changed for like 75 years. Browning mad it in the early 30's. It has an area target of like 4000m or something. I was a 50 gunner for 10 months in Iraq, and with all the sand that floats around there, I had all most no problems with the mechanics of it, and its just cool looking.

I'm waiting for all the 15-year olds to come in here and start creaming their pants over weapons they've never even touched. "ZOMG, I totally pwn with the G36C [or SCAR-L] in BF2!"

The M16A1 sucked in comparison to the A2--much needed improvements were made. The M16A2 and the M4 (and M4A1) are damned fine weapons. Never had any complaints with mine, and never had them fail when it counts.

From what I've seen, the M60E4 is more reliable than the M240G. Think the Navy is getting them. And a demo diver buddy of mine just sent me pictures of the "new" Navy M14. Pretty snazzy--it's definitely a step up.

the best rifle in the world is definatly the m/16a4/m4 the capabilities of both weapon platfroms is definatly a combat multiplier for any soldier. The AK series were good weapons back in the day before anything else came out that carried any weight. By seeing what an ak47 and how it works it is durable ill give you that but anything else its inaccurate heavy and outdated.
