We are just friends now, but we both want our baby to have his last name. I've heard this was a new law, and I don't know where to find out if it is true or not.

No, you do not have to be married, but the hospital will automatically give the baby your last name until they come to do the birth certificate. Then he needs to be there to sign papers acknowledging that the baby is his and then they wil give the baby is last name.

I have no idea, but I think it is a fabulous idea. I made the mistake of giving my daughter her Dad's last name, thinking we were going to get married. For her it means a lot, for me, school, my husband(different man) and everyone else it is so insignificant and she doesn't want to think of changing it.
