well, it depends. maybe it's just a bad period for her, cuz the guy wasnt there, and she got some strenght to say some things that she worried about. dont be too much hurt.
if u knew her personaly, then such a things should never be solved over IM. go talk to her.
the thing is, if u just sit there and be sad becouse she did it, is definetley much worse then knowing that that was just a temporary period of bad mood, and that she honestly didnt mean it. at least, find out, what's that "hard" thing for her, cuz u dont wanna regret u still dont know why.

maybe she has developed feelings for this guy but for some reason she cannot be with this guy. But if this guy keeps IM her, then she cannot forget him but develop more feelings for him.
He should discuss with this girl why she wants to forget him. See if he did anything wrong to her.
