I have a Coolpix camera too. I will never get another one, either.
You have an option to delete everything - hidden or otherwise. Use that. It takes a little fussing around to locate that option but eventually it shows up. Also you should be aware that the Nikon has internal memory apart from the memory stick. You have to access that area in order to get rid of pics stored there.
Good luck.

Re-Format the card whilst its in the camera. Do it a couple of times. If you are really concerned...put the card in the PC...and run a re-format scan under Windows
Go:
Start/Control Panel/performance & Maintenance/administrive tools/computer management/disc management. Here you should be able to find the USB card reader and your card...and run a format etc there. That should comp clear the card
....you will almost certainly have to re-format the card again when its in the camera after all that...or the camera might not recognise the card.

On my Nikon 5700 Coolpix there are menu options to Protect, Hide, and Mark for Transfer when in viewing mode; Protected or Hidden images won't be deleted when you choose Erase All, you either have to go into the Hide / Protect option and unhide / unprotect them or go to Set-Up and choose to Format the card (this will erase ALL images and ALL folders).

put the card in your computer. You'll see a file of deletes or discards or some similar name. Open that up and drag the pictures there to your wastebasket and delete them permanently.

If you have an option to "show hidden files", turn it on and then delete them. If not, format your your memory stick.
