Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* The Business of Software: What Every Manager, Programmer, and Entrepreneur Must Know to Thrive and Survive in Good Times and Bad by Michael A. Cusumano
* Software That Sells: A Practical Guide to Developing and Marketing Your Software Project by Edward Hasted

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

As far as the copyright is concerned...

You can do this at the US Copyright Office – see the last 3 links in the source box. The application is fairly simple & the cost is $45 per application.

Despite what others state, a "poor man's" copyright is NOT the same as registering it. Here's what the US Copyright Office has to say:

"The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a 'poor man’s copyright.' There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration."

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

All you need is first to develop the software, make a website and sell the software from there. You have to decide what terms and conditions you have to choose for licencing your product. Get a protected trade mark for your product and thats it. There are no legal formalities. Only if someone breaches your terms and conditions for licencing and copyright only then the legal question arises. As for developing the software, all you need to do is get a legal copy of the software and not a pirated one.

If you have legal programming language (Delphi, C, Basic etc.) you have all rights to develop commercial products using it. If you want to use in your project any additional libraries/components - you must carefully read license for this components.

I develop shareware several years and have some experience. If you have questions - I can help you.
