Don't teach "religion", teach a lifestyle. If you're calling it religion, it's as if you're seperating spiritualoty from your reality. God can teach, if not, the cosmos can surely teach a lot. Birth and death is one of the many minor things to learn about, but that doesn't teach religion nor a lifestyle. Suffering and fear doesn't teach anything either. Only love can teach good things. Love is a consistant attitude of value towards life. that's my belief. Unfortunately, that's not how everyone defines love. Love isn't a mere feeling! It's feeling with attitude!
Conlusion: Forget "religion", get a life with jesus, or atleast become one with the cosmos. Don't do what you believe would be bad for the cosmos.

I honestly think that no matter what you believe in as far as spirituality, it's important TO teach spirituality. It's important to teach your children that there is something bigger than yourself......someone or something to which you have to answer for your actions. I think if they have spirituality, they will have an easier time dealing with things like death and suffering, and thinking that all your good and bad deeds in life have consequence will make them more careful about what they do.
If in the end, we all die, there is no God, and yet we believed in a God our whole lives, so what?! No harm done..........and because that person was spiritual during their lifetime, they hopefully tried to lead a better life because of it. Also, it is what helps people cope with hard parts of life.........having faith, hope, and security in a God. It's not hurting anyone to have that faith........nor is it hurting anyone to believe in Santa, or the EAster bunny. They are wonderful things, positive things........and there's no harm done if they wind up not existing. (by the way, I happen to believe very much in God)

To love God, believe in truth, Think for others, help others, If you have to suffer for a good cause do that. Birth and Death are the reality of the life. Everyone who is born will die one day.

Religion-nothing but means to control people
God- Fairy Tale, like Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy
Suffering happens, try to avoid it
Birth-pick the right mate, procreating is important, it is the only way our genes live on
Death-Don't worry about it, it happens, don't rush it.
