My son has a nice Irish sheep-dog....Highlands-Sheltie...a miniature Lassie.....named Happy ..... very cute...very intelligent....very sensitive....very caring.. He is just like a child.

Oh! what big expressive eyes he has....their color changes with his expressions. His faces expresses what he wants to say.

He also talks as whenever he wants anything my son will tell him speak up ...only then you will get it...then he stomps his little foot and shakes his head and says "do".

He is a true bred pedigreed English dog but only understands Hindi and only speaks Hindi! We have a nice neighbor who has a pit-bull. Now this Pit-bull barks like the bark of the devil, hollow, horrible.. terrifying...terrible bark. But Happy charges at him, flings himself at the fence and barks away....in Hindi..!!!

Well this Pit-bull just stares at Happy...just stares !

My son says ........." Happy is barking in HINDI... calling them names in chaste Hindi......so naturally the Pit-bull cannot understand Hindi and looks at Happy.... perplexed... "

Happy is a sheep dog. A great watch dog. So he treats us like his sheep. Watches us like a hawk. But he bascially wants to see us safe, secure and happy.

He is also an accountant. He counts us......2 in house....2 to come back....now one still out of the house....and finally all home.....only then it is time for him to relax.

He has a bio-clock in his head. When the time is 7pm he will come to my wife, with concern write large on his face.

Oh! with deep deep eyes he will look at her and say," It is 7 pm now and Hersh has not come from office". .......

Then she has to phone Hersh on his office phone and if the phone just rings then she has to put the receiver close to him and say, " Hersh has left office, he will be coming soon."

Still he will sit there looking at her as if saying" Why dont you ring him on his cell?"

When she does that and the phone still rings then she has to tell him " See the phone is ringing Hersh is in the metro, that means he will be at home in 30 minutes!"

After that he will be satisfied. He will then go and sit quitely facing the door.

Remember my wife had told him 30 minutes? So after exactly 35 minutes he will come.....look at her....stand up on her lap.... and say " Now what? How can you be so calm? Where is Hersh? Find out! " He is very commanding.....with his deep brown eyes!

Then she has to leave everything she is doing and sit with him on the stairs and keep looking at the street......waiting for Hersh to appear !

The bus stop is about 400 yds away. At about the time Hersh alights from the bus, Happy gets to know he is there! No one can see anything, but he starts getting excited and we know Hersh is now nearing home!

When he sees Hersh turn the corner, he runs to him, running in circles around him. Very happy that he is back but at the same time scolding him too, for being late!

So you have seen how very intelligent....very sensitive....very caring.. these Shelties are.

Just go for one. You will never regret it.

I have had many breeds of dogs over the years as watch dogs and companions but the best by far I've had is the Jack Russel terrier we have now. Very sharp and continually on the watch, naturally protecting our territory and family. Not to mention, fearless of anything or person, and absolutely fantastic with our toddler who is 18 months now. They love each other. Also they don't cost a fortune to feed.
By the way burglars and would be intruders are more concerned about yappy terriers than big sleepy dogs which are usually friendly.
do some research and you'll find this is the best dog to own and you won't regret it.

Go to your animal shelter and talk to them about the dogs they are holding. Look through the shelter to see if there is a young adult, 1 to 1 1/2 that is appealing to you. If it's very friendly, that is a good thing. You want your dog to be friendly. As you and your dog bond, it will naturally protect you. Most dogs that are treated well and love their master and home, will protect it to a degree as it matures.

Don't expect much before the ages of 2 to 2/1. They are just crazy teenagers until then!

Good Luck!

My dog is half lab and half shepherd. He is the most loving dog you could ever want to have. He is also huge and will rip you to shreds if you try to hurt me. He answers the door with me every time and tries to get around me so the person there can see him. He is very obedient though, he loves children and cats.
I seem to hear of a lot of other people owing this particular mixed breed dog. I don't know why this happens so often but if you find that one kind of mutt you will see they are wonderful pets.

consider a Great Pyrenees--this was the royal dog of King Louis 14th of France--the dogs guarded the royal palace---the Great Pyrenees is a sheepdog and a natural guardian of the flock, or family members or children of the family--the dog will give its life to protect the flock or family--in ancient days, as a sheepdog, the Great Pyrenees, would kill wolves and even bears, to protect the sheep !! the Great Pyrenees is eager to please their owners, so therefore they are easy to train...they are intimidating to look at, especially because they are rather large dogs, yet are sweeties to the family owners and children, yet very menacing and dangerous looking to strangers and intruders !!! the Great Pyrenees naturally sleeps against the front door of the home, so nobody enters without the Great Pyrenees being there !!! these dogs are great with children, and are playfull and fun and do not snip or bite, even when the children tug on their ears or crawl all over the dogs to play.!! these dogs are UNBELIEVABLY WONDERFULL--do some research on them, and you will want one ASAP!!! trust me- i had a female Great Pyrenees, with my two young daughters, and she was the best dog EVER !!!!!! check petlovers.com...this is a site for rescue groups..just put in your zip code, and be AMAZED at how many choices you have !!! my step-son just adapted a 4 yr old male Great Pyrenees, and he and his wife just adore this dog !! my wife and i, just adopted a Great Pyrenees mix, from petfinders.com and my dog Sylvester is GREAT !! check it out....try it....do a good deed...adopt a dog !! good luck to you in your search, for a new pet, that is a good watch-dog also !!!!!

actually I saw a "advoid crime" article where they intervied a burgler who said he feared to bother a house with a chihuahua in residence- why? they can virtually be counted on to bark and attract attention. So almost any dog could do. first choice the working or herding group, or a retriever but terriors also can be counted on to bark an alert. check out www.AKC.org they have stuff describing breeds.

We have an enormous shepherd/coyote mix who is the most loving, adorable thing in the world to his "family", and utterly terrifying to anyone else. Just pick a big, loud dog with a sweet nature and you should be fine. They don't need to be vicious to keep people away--they just need to look like it.

My pet Yorkie/Chihuahua is a great watch dog. She hears every sound made and alerts us with a growl or bark. However, not so good for protection ;P

Well, you can get a puppy and find ways to raise it to be both. I have a friend who has a Rottweiler, she is a very sweet dog, but her instincts are to protect her owner.
