Halal does not just refer to slaughter of animals for consumption according to Muslim rules it also applies to all aspects of a Muslim's life.

Halal means permitted. Opposite of Halal is Haram - Forbidden.

In terms of food - Halal means the animal must have been slaughtered and cooked or prepared according to Islamic rules.

Contrary to what had been claimed, it does not mean cutting the throat of the animal and hanging it up to die a slow agonising death. Instead, anyone slaughtering the animal must recite the name of God and hence bearing the responsibility of making sure the animal dies a quick death and more importantly that it is done out of necessity ie. for food as opposed to game i.e. hunting for fun.

Halal also means the food had to be prepared in a way that would not include ingredients which are Haram ie. forbidden e.g. Pork or lard or alcohol etc.

The concept of Halal/Haram can also be applied to behaviour or action and can be more far reaching and complex. To put it simply eg. It is Halal to work hard and earn money honestly. It is NOT Halal or it is Haram to kill someone and take his money etc.

halal meat has been blessed before a ritual slaughter - there are 5 points to the slaughter , sorry i can' recall all af them but i uses a very sharp knife and the animal is turned upside down and the knife is run accross the neck the knofe has to be sharp , no nicks , the movement has to be steady , no pausing , no preasure , , then the guy who does it gets covered in blood .
