It is pretty hard to explain the whole thing on one foot, but generally this is the place where most of the traditional ceremonies are led. The synagogue is divided to two, and there's the men area and the women area, while the prayers are led by a cantor.
In the Orthodox synagogues there is no music (except of the melodic prayers) and playing musical instrument is forbidden. And yes, it can be very lively.

well, there's someone who leads the whole congregation in the prayers... there's singing, they say some stuff together out loud, they stuff quietly to themselves... what did u see that made it seem so lively??

they are praying that the saviour will come and rescue them,,, although last time he tried they crucified and tortured him and his followers were murdered, so i hope they don't hold their breath...
