So a square slice of cheese will fit when you make a grilled cheese sandwitch. Also a lot of the lunch meat is square.

Actually a lot of flat round breads can be found in African countries (Ethiopia) and the Middle East. Quite ancient and preceded the square loaves we have now. Pizza is a form of bread which began this way and stayed.
Think the square idea for baking bread didn't come around til the middle ages in Europe.
History also teaches us that during the Crusades, anything saracen was considered taboo and connected to the devil. Flat round bread was an Arab as well as saracen thing so Europeans changed it cause it wasn't Christian.
On a lighter note personally I think it was changed cause too many people were starting to hurl the bread like a discus and using it as a weapon.
Also made a pretty good shield when it was baked too hard to eat. LOL

It does come in the round shape also. For example, Native Americans bake their oven bread in round cake pans inside a dome-shaped oven out of doors.

It is commonly baked in pans which squares out the corners. It makes it easier to get more pans in the ovens. If it wasn't put in bread pans it would be a round loaf.
The square shape also makes it easier to cut into standard slices to make sandwiches.

Do you mean just regular sandwhich bread? Because bread comes in all shapes and sizes.
But good old Wonder Bread is shaped the way it is purely due to make mass production and transport as efficient and consistant as possible.

It's the pan, and that only applies to bread baked in a pan. French bread comes form a roll. It's not cooked in a pan, but the dogh rolled out and tossed in the over as a roll.

All the bread pans are square - so you can fit more of them in the oven.
