Hello France,

I confess i don't know its origin, however i do think they drive round in silver cars for some strange reason. It used to be Volvo's years ago. In fact if the car is silver and a four by four then they are the tossyest.

It's a derogatory term and originally meant specifically someone who likes his drink. It's a very old word - Shakespeare uses it. Even in his day, it may have been used in a transferred sense - "toss" could have several innuendoes in connection with "bed" in this song from Twelfth Night.

When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came to man's estate,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
'Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gates,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came, alas! to wive,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
By swaggering could I never thrive,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came unto my beds,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
With toss-pots still had drunken heads,
For the rain it raineth every day.

A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
But that's all one, our play is done,
And we'll strive to please you every day.

Originally it meant a drunk. The pot was what you drank out of, and tossing it meant throwing back your drink.
The meaning has become more confused since tossing now means something else.
