From a grand perspective, what good comes from any war? That being said, we did after all realize many of our objectives in the end.
The North was bled white, and even though it conquered in the end, has never been able to rise to any significant threat. In fact Vietnam is beginning to prosper only after it is beginning to adopt a more capitalistic free market econony. They have ceased to trouble anyone outside their region for the next 30+ years.
The area ( at least the South) was on the whole better off politically and economically during US involvement than it ever was under the French, or Afghanistan was during Russian involvement.

Some of the good things that came out of the Viet Nam war are knowing how NOT to fight a war, and to not think "inside the box" and only "inside the box" when viewing what the other side wanted. Neither side understood the other's true motivations, and the American's didn't have a single diplomat that could speak Vietnamese in Viet Nam at the beginning of that nightmare. The Americans did not understand that the North viewed the war as a civil war, and not a war for communist domination. Now the U.S. is actually seeking military alliances with Viet Nam due to the war on terrorism, U.S. Veteran's are welcome there, and communism is more of a word than an actuality as it doesn't really exist the way it used to. The government still dominates, but there is plenty of capitalism going on.
As to who won the war, the U.S. was actually at the point of winning easily after the Tet Offensive (they could have marched on Hanoi with not very much resistance because so many of the North's troops had been killed in the Tet Offensive), then due to political pressure back home, withdrew its forces. The collapse of the corrupt government of the South was then just a matter of time. Also, an awful lot of emergency medicine was advanced by the war, but what an awful way to do it!

The wietnamese and the komunist side won the wietnam war. The major good thing is of course independence for the wietnamese people. Any war or military confrontation like the could war tends to drive the technology towards more advanced inventions. Thats the major good things out of the nam war. But overall I think that the negativs is overruling the positiv side. Johan.

Nothing good what so ever. It was another thing that the neocons wanted to use against the red diaper doper babies (as savage calls them) to show them we rule. Turns out we didn't rule as much as we thought we did and we got are A S S handed to us on a platter with all the trimmings. You had Asian dudes all up on us like ugly on Whoopi Goldberg.
WAR, UH! What is it good for... Absolutely nothing UH!

USA must have noticed that it was not much more powerful than USSR and the balance remained, so war did not happen.
