In hinduism ...when the sages reach the state called samadhi..i.e. after attaining the vision of the absolute...its a practise to slowly poision themselves to death or walking into waters and dying.....
in the same way rama entered a river called Sarayu and left his body according to mythology..

Lord Rama has taken `jalasamadhi' (submerged in water pond). Before him, Laxmanaji (his younger brother) has also taken jalasamadhi on order of Lord Rama.
This is because there period for `leela' (all the duties and shows for completion of whom he has taken avtara) has been over.

Lord Vishnu took Rama avatar to teach moral values to humans. He can't come as tiger or a lion to teach moral values to human beings. So he took birth as a human. After teaching moral values he drowned himself in the Sarayu river. You can read Ramayanam to understand better.
