It would never be a good idea without talking to your friend first -- unless you don't want to keep the friendship.

This can vary. Never maybe. The day after they break up maybe. It's really about how things are between those two. The worst part of it is that neither of them will really tell you the whole truth about it. If he is 'somewhat' ok with you going out with her, he'll just say he's ok with it so he doesn't look like he's still into her. It'll be a big mess is all I'm trying to say. Good luck. You'll need it.

usually, the answer would be never. because if your friend and you hang out, together with his ex who is also your new gf, it'll be extremely awkward.
but first, let your friend get over the girl. then make sure he's totally 101% ok with you dating her, before even trying to make a move.
dont rush. friendships always triumphs relationships.

I suppose it depends on the split. If your friend was to blame, hey, go for it. If it was the girlfriends choice maybe give your mate a shoulder to cry on for a week and then ask her out

That my freind is a touchy one speak to your freind about it and see first how he feels about the girl in question,if he's still emotionaly attached your best off to stay out of it peoples feelings are hard to gadge right after a break up. take your time and see first how he feels. and then go with your gut.
