good question... actually it is the current question being debated in my country's legislative body.. As far as im concern, its not a bad idea because that will aid our government in providing the basic services to its legitimate citizens. The only obstacle now is how to develop a system that will work when u have millions of people including illiterate ones... It only becomes a bad idea when the people behind the system will use it to make it easier for them to promote their self serving goals.

of course not its a silly idea, the current eu card has allready been hacked by some german, and he can now clone the new passports, which work just tthe same as the american ones. If aliens existed, and they could make the cards for us it would be a great idea. They dont, and if a human makes the card, a human can copy the card, the only people to benefit will be terrorists, and thieves, because of silly people beliving that the new card has made them safer and more secure. whereas the criminals will be laughing their asses off cloning cards and stealing identites like never b4. The government will the scare us with this news, and raise taxes and petrol prices, whilst we our minds are on this tradgedy. Its the ilusionists trick, look at this hand makking funny movements whilst the other hand does the naughty trick

Many, perhaps most, people can't read or write and their birth was never registered. Many still have ID cards (I have seen this in Africa, for example). Perhaps most of the world lives in countries with ID cards or quasi-ID cards like US and Canadian driving licenses.
In much of Continental Europe there are forge-resistent ID cards. But that's only effective if you can prevent identity theft and that only works if you follow people from birth to death. It's something of a police state, but in many countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland) you do have to register with city hall when you move someplace. And it's far harder to "work off the books" than in the US and UK (which is one reason why economic migrants head for those places).
Within the EU/EEA/Switzerland ID cards optionally take the place of passports. I suppose that is what you want. But there is resistance in Anglo-Saxon countries to this perceived invasion of privacy. I suppose it will happen anyway, and once people have to use passports to visit Canada or Mexico, so what?

Most nations do have them. Even the ones people think are so bad. The UK will have them soon and should. In a way they are in the USA. It will come that every person will have an ID chip and will be tracked all over the world. It will have to happen or there will have to be a very large decline in the population.

Yes a good idea. Im for as much security as possible and would welcome CCTV everywhere also.
Ive nothing to hide so would have an i.d card tomorrow (although the Gov expect us to pay for it which pees me off). But there would still be thousands who wouldnt get registered, as they cant even keep track on illegal immigrants. So id cards are not the answer.

Well we already have passports, and they work really well don't they? Apart from the fact they can be easily forged of course - ID cards are just another way for the government to collect personal data on all of us, in the guise of preventing terrorism, when really it is just another measure of control!

They are a very good idea.
With biometrics they couldn't be forged. You cant forge a retina scan dispite what the movies will have you believe.
CHARLOTTE_B is wrong. It is not a MEANS of control it is a way of FREEDOM. Freedom from fear, from persecution, from idiocy.
Only CRIMINALS have anything to fear in the world and therefore a legitimate excuse for the hate of ID cards.
Bring them on, Bring their security, Lets wipe out these criminals FOREVER.
I DONT FEAR THEM,
WHY DO YOU?

I think the cards are irrelevant. It's is the database that goes with the cards that is an issue.
We don't need it in uk.
Terrorist don't hide who they are, they hide their intentions.
ID Cards would not have stopped 7/7 bombings in london.
Good question.

No, it is just another repressive measure of state control as a result of interference in the autonomy of other countries, nothing new just another means to an end.
