Hy!
Most DVDs have built in menus, so that you can select the behavior of the disk. These menus are actually programs and thus, it may be possible that they may crash the DVD emulator built into many DVD players (the DVD disk plays on a virtual DVD player drive on PCs). It is also possible that the disk is damaged and, for instance, while playing the menu an error occurs and the player crashes, while on DVD such error is ignored. Many DVDs I've seen are, to some extent, fault tolerant. You may need to do some research work to find the exact cause!
Good luck!

because on a regular dvd player, it doesn't have all the "checks and balances" (for lack of a better term) that pc software has... all a player does is look for a region code, and start playing- on pc, it's checking if dvd+r, or dvd-r, the region code, is it a r/w?, you get the picture... too much blah blah blah...instead of just "play this thing". Also, does the PC dvd drive support double layering? some older drives don't...

If your software are crashing just because you have inserted a scratced cd or a dvd you will have to get more RAM.Usually all dvd readers do the job but stammer due to lack of RAM in your pc.

Keymaker you should know it's in key it self. Like some DVD has it's own IN-CODE and OUT-CODE and some DVD is standard in and out code. When you burn DVD it automatically burn LEAD-IN & LEAD-OUT. That is the reason for it. If you use proper DVX Codec then your PC wont crash

Sometimes its the way the content was compiled and put on the disc, but more often than not, its the copy protection they add in. DRM may be a "neccesary" evil, but it can screw up your system. Don't believe me, ask sony about the rootkits it had on its cd's to prevent ripping them to mp3...

i think the format and version of the dvd compared to the drive itself also has something to do with it
