Most dogs are so loyal to their people that any breed you like should be good. I have a black lab and an american staffordshire pit-bull...I don't worry at all. The pit is only 1 1/2 and a big baby. The lab is 5 yrs old. In summer she sits in the same part of the backyard where she can see everything. Every night she goes out and begins her watch. Then in the morning she comes inside at dawn. It's adorable because she hasn't been trained to do this. I wouldn't recommend getting a dog just for the purpose of protection though. It's a nice bonus but I have seen too many dogs banished to a lonely life in the backyard without a lot of attention. That makes for a dog that is not socialized properly, too aggressive and not to mention heartbroken. Also, you need to consider other things like do you have kids? Live in the country or town? Have neighbors that would be mad about the barking? What kind of time do you have to devote to grooming and exercise? Dogs are almost like having kids! Have fun!

Generally in my oppion in houses, try to get minature Dachusunds not sure on the spelling, but they are small dogs, usually easy to maintain, and they are really good watch dogs. they keep people out of houses, and you can with a boston Terrier if you want to go with a smaller dog as well. Larger dogs I would recommend probably something like a Dalmation, or a Golden Retriever.

i have a elk hound-Labrador mix and he is awesome at protecting the house, my neighbor that i don't like tried coming into my house and when she opened the door he tried to bite her! She no longer tries to get into my house. I also have a miniature dachshund AKA wiener dog, and if he hears anything outside, he barks up a storm. In general, any dogs that is big and has a mean or loud bark can be trained to be a protector....every time you hear something outside just ask the dog "who's hear" in an urgent voice...eventually when the dog hears something, he will bark alot and look out the windows and will also stand at the door.

i think rotts,my rott king is very protective and a noise box when someone comes to the door. He is so big no one wants to come in. He is also very good with kids. His father is the same way as he is. Really though i don't believe it is the breed of the dog it is how it it is treated if u love your dog and treat it right it will protect u and your family.

it depends uponwhere u live ...
if u live in cooler climes afghan hound or german spherad are good choice.
however they wiil need quite a lot of exercising so choose accoding to your time requirements.
if living in condo pomeranian are good choice also they are good barkers but might no go along with small kids.
if you are in tropical weather i would recommend dobermann pit bull are not recommended as they are very agressive towards animals your other pets particularly dogs and quite friendly with humans hence does not make good guard dog as it might befriend the burgulars : )

German Shepherds....of course. They are the most common breed used by law enforcement. They are very smart and they are the number 4 on the AKC list of most popular dogs..that and I have two of them.
