I have a 3yr old lab named Asher. Everytime someone goes near the front door, he knocks you out of the way and runs outside.
He pees in our neighbors yard, chases people down the street, jumps in your car if the door is open, if not he jumps on your car. He knocks people over that come to our door.
I've been trying to get him to stop and he won't.
I've tried teaching him how to sit and stay.
I've tried teaaching him he is not allowed in the livingroom.
I've tried a firm voice, "bad dog"
I've tried rewarding him for good behavior at the door, I keep a can of treats at the door so if he does what he is supposed to, he gets a treat.
NOTHING WORKS!
Please help, he drives everyone, including the neighborhood nuts.

He is just the candidate for a Gentle Leader head harness. Like this> http://images.google.com/images?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&q=gentle+leader&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images
Read the book that comes with it and follow instructions.. I guarantee you will have a new dog..that you can live with...the $15 investment will be the best you ever spent..You can get them at most pet supply shops, or on line catalogs, or eBay...Be sure to put it on just as instructed,,and make it tight enough the first time...Do not let the salesperson convince you that the one called "Halti" is the same..it is not..It won't fit the same or work as well.

First of all the Dog Whisperer is a must. You'll get the idea of what you should do.
At 3 years old its gonna take time and a lot of patients, be prepared for it to take months rather than days.
Whatever you want to teach him, you HAVE to be consistent. Make the rules then follow them yourself.
Knock on the door, inside or out it sounds like he doesn't care which it is. When he storms the door, don't yell and shout. Take his collar calmly and move him away from the door. Even if it's only a few feet, that's fine. He has to learn where he's supposed be and how he's supposed to act when this sound comes from the door.
If you need to get his attention once he storms the door, hook your fingers and tap his shoulder or neck firmly and quickly, this imitates the bite of the alpha and should do the trick. You may have to do it a time or two, but he should pick up on it quickly.
Make him sit or not, which ever you prefer, just as long as he stays there and is calm. He's gonna get up at least a hundred times, be prepared to move him back to his place each time and do it calmly but firmly, don't give him treats yet, no praise, just move him away and into the area you want him to be in.
We have carpeted living room with a four foot area in front of the door that's tile, I trained my hubby's beagles to sit on the carpet and stay there while the door was opened and people came in or out. Also trained them to go back to the carpet when some one reaches for the storm door handle, they like to look out the storm door glass and watch the traffic go by. It took a while, but they finally got the idea.
Conquer the door thing first and the rest should fall into place. If you make him understand that he's not allowed around the door, then he won't be running out of it and that much of the problem is solved.
Using a leash should be the same. Make him sit calmly in his area by the door and put the leash on. If he gets excited make him stay until he calms again. Open the door, should he react to this other than looking at you, give the leash a firm yank to get his attention again. I prefer a choke chain collars for this, placed at the base of the skull and not around the middle of the neck. If you control the head, you control the rest of the body. Gentle leaders are good for this also. Choke chain collars are made for training and I don't leave them on the 'girls' other than for walking or training. Too many times they've slipped the normal collars and got away. Luckily, they were too busy sniffing around and were easy to catch.
When you're ready to go outside, tell him "okay" or "let's go" or "come" any word that will let him know it's okay to go out the door now.
Once outside make him behave and walk with you. Don't yell or shout or get excited, he'll react to your excitement, just like kids will. Quick and firm yanks of the leash will let him know he's not acting properly, but Yank and Walk. Don't stop to tell him what he did wrong, he won't understand. Just Yank and Walk keeping a steady pace. If he gets too excited, let him have a short time out to collect his thoughts. Let him sit, or stand until he calms, 15-30 seconds, then continue the walk.
I know this is long but it's just a few ideas I picked up from the Dog Whisperer and they really work if you're consistent and don't confuse the dog.

You simply MUST watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geograhic channel. Cesar Milan is remarkable and I think you can get some clues on how to "rehabilitate" your dog from him.

I am a cat person as you may have guessed and I love watching this show, though I have never owned a dog. Just try being a pack leader to six cats!

I started with dog on leash and opening door, and letting it slam in her face if she tried to exit w/o my release word. This wasn't getting through--she didn't mind her face hitting as much as I did! So, I used a prong collar and opened the door---if she tried to run out, I corrected her with a pop with the leash. One dog's too thick furred around the neck, and prong wasn't felt, apparently. She pretty much started taking me seriously, for the first time with one push of the button one time. I finally got that look of respect I thought I had, but her behavior was saying otherwise. I think clicker and treats etc. is great for a lot of things, but this is behavior that can be life threatening and it needs to be stopped quicker. I still refresh now and then, with door starting to slam in face, and they remember.

Tie your dog to yourself! Attach her leash to your belt loop, arrange for someone to ring the bell or open the door. When she tries to rush the door, firmly turn around and walk away, dragging her behind. She will soon get the idea that you control the situation and will wait for your okay.

no he is highly charged , not a crazy dog, he gets hyper active as young labs unusually are, don't blame the dog , it is but natural for him to behave like this, just punish him in an odd manner, cause tying him will make him more aggresive, try to ignore him for a while when he seeks attention , just tell him things you don't want him to do and do not try to reward him everytime. he will mellow soon

Your dog needs one thing more than any other

EXERCISE
EXERCISE
EXERCISE

Why else do you think he is running out and playing? He is bored so much he is escaping with the talent of Houdini and with his breed he needs tons of exercise.

Try long vigorous exercises then go back to your training you were already doing. I think you will find he will listen then.

Your baby is just bouncing with energy that he needs to let loose of.

Good luck, have fun!
